"Professional and personal development through the media of dance."
The Cotton Clubbers is a performing and teaching dance company. It was founded in 1999 by Angela Andrew and Malvina Dunne, two long standing dancers on the international swing dance scene. They were joined by Grace Sentamu in 2001 as part of the directing team. The initial aim was to develop their dancing whilst maintaining the standard of performance and social dancing set by the original dancers from the jazz era and current teachers, who the group looked to for inspiration. We recognise that the dance is under-represented by young people, and overlooked by the black community. We believe that by sharing our knowledge and passion for the dance it will survive and continue to develop; that others will gain as much out of the dance as we have. Therefore The Cotton Clubbers aims are to: - promote Lindy-hop, Swing and other vernacular dance forms;
- make the dance accessible to young people;
- raise the profile of swing within the black community.
The company’s ethos “to develop and learn” underpins the projects it undertakes. The Directors believe that the process is as important as the product and so bring a ‘yes…let’s!’ approach to new ventures. In addition, the initial aim is there as a constant reminder and is applied to performances, teaching etc. The Performance group is a collection of artistes; dancers, tap dancers, comedians, who come together to recreate shows in the entertainment style from the jazz era. It is also a forum for budding performers to develop, meet and exchange with other artistes. Although the company primarily works with women, here are some of the professional performers who have worked with the company: Dan Baines (UK), Veronique David (France), Martin Ellis (UK), Sophie Monheim (Belgium), Julie Oram (UK), Fatima Teffahi (Belgium), Rob and Diane Van Haaren (USA), Lennart Westerlund (Sweden), Chester Whitmore (USA). We have also performed alongside other dance companies including: The Rhythm Hot Shots (Sweden) The Happy Swingers (France). They are great because of their passion.” Martha Graham (1894 – 1994) Dancer/Choreographer
